"In March 1989, a car accident left Julie Bergeron's face
smashed, her ribs crushed, her wrist broken, and her lung collapsed."Bergeron tried unsuccessfully for five months to deal with the emotional impact of the crash. Then she picked up a
paint brush and painted a picture of herself. Half of the face was light and happy, the other dark and bloody. It was, the Divide resident and professional artist believes, the best therapy she could have had." "When I did it, I thought, 'There, I did it,' . . . It finalized everything I couldn't get out any other way," says Bergeron, 39. "In cases like Bergeron's, art is more than pretty pictures, sculptures or drawings; it is a pathway to the soul. "Bergeron realized on her own that art offered a way to put
her car accident behind her. But therapists across the country are using the creative arts as a way of unlocking the unconscious and freeing the imagination of their patients."
